The biggest pro is centralized authentication.  if you look at the main
page of the wiki, you will see there are several services that require
usernames/passwords, so ldap authentication provides one
username/password database that all those applications can use instead
of having to maintain a different username/password database for each
service.

The con is that this is overkill for a single application.  You don't
need to own a semi-tractor and trailer to go buy one jug of milk from
one block away.  Similarly, you do not need ldap authentication to
support one application.

Because no matter how long/hard I try people just won't convert to linux
workstations.  So long as the world uses windows workstations in
networks over 20 computers, active directory is the only way to go.

There is no escaping the need for cross-platform skills.  Windows guys
know Windows, Mac guys know Macs.  *Computer* guys need to know both,
plus linux ;)

But I take your point that a good UI eliminates the need for technical
know-how, and I found the lsmb ui to be pretty good once I got the hang
of using it...

(office-to-office) connectivity, or can be used for single workstations
to connect remotely to a central office, or both:
