I am currently only running CentOS 5 but use it for many things that 
require _extra_ packages.  I.e. not in the CentOS repositories.  But 
there is a solution.  Rpmforge.org has many packages perl-* and other 
packages.

Take a look at <http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/RPMForge>.

This has made my life much simpler.
