By the way, is there a default password for the postgres user?

By default, no password is acceptable.  You have to set a password by doing something like this:

sudo su postgres -c psql

then from the psql client:

ALTER USER postgres WITH PASSWORD 'secretpassword';

You may also need to change the pg_hba.conf (also in the PGDATA directory) as per our INSTALL file.
