I'd like to add an OT here:
if you are going to install or modify things, I always use this:
script foo
foo being any filename I want to use. Then, everything that goes onto
the screen (except vi sessions) appear in foo -- all my commands and
errors and all the output from them. Can be very helpful. A simple
exit will stop script.
When I had several junior admins working for me, script was called on
root login with the date as the argument. Then if something was
hosed, I could retrace what was done.
