   Well, yes;  to me, it does...

   When I do that on a debian system, I'll usually put it in the /opt
directory;  i.e., to /opt/ledgersmb.  Since the debian package installs
to /usr/share/ledgersmb, this has the advantage of being able to run the
two installations in parallel if you like.

   You did the installation from the tar.gz file
into /usr/share/ledgersmb?  There may be some issues with that;  have
you already tried cleaning up the results of both of the installs and
then just installing the deb again?
