You are saying that there is a difference between copying from template1
and installing INTO template1?

Does LedgerSMB create databases copying from template1 or installing
into template1?
And since I'm writing my own app for my vendors, customers and current
prices,
what is the right/wrong way to create new databases to avoid problems
with other apps?

Should not. To elaborate on what Chris Travers said. To do anything
with PostgreSQL you need to be connected to "a database". Template1 is
just convenient and happens to be the "template" other databases are
created from. You could connect to postgres users database - postgres.
The process of installing LSMB makes a new database from template1 then
connects to it.
If memory serves me nothing besides the creation of the LSMB database
happens in/to template1.
Sometimes a DBA/DBM may decide to add languages and other functionality
into template1 so new databases get them when created.

It is possible to install into template1, but normally it copies from
template 1. I suppose we should probably catch this at create
database time and throw an error (we haven't done this yet because
SQL-Ledger didn't and we haven't gotten around to this point).

Ok. On the first screen (which includes login info), you can leave it
at template1. All this does is connect and get a list of current
db's.
On the second screen (with the chart of accounts options), you should
type the db you want to install into. This should generally not be
template1.

Hi
I need some help in seting LSMB to run on a household LAN. I have tried many
attempts. Between locking up a computer and just reading way to much and
getting confused, I decided I need some help. The senario I thought was quite
simple, I have Debian (Sidux) box with LSMB installed and I would like the
Windows Xp box to have assess to this information.
I believe /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf
should be setup like this
local ledgersmb all 169.XXX.X.X md5
/etc/ledgersmb/ledgersmb.conf
DBname = ledgersmb
DBhost = localhost (does this need to be changed to 169.XXX.X.X )
DBport = 5432
DBUserName = ledgersmb
Do I need to change /etc/hosts
I am assuming apache2.2 needs to be modified, but I am at a loss to figuire
that out.
I am positive that I have missed something else.
I am open to all suggestions or links

Change you point of view and you can easily accomplish this.
the pg_hba.conf file is telling Debian(postgreSQL) wher to listen and
how to authenticate sql sessions. It only needs to listen localy and
authenticate in that manner (trust). Authenticate the user ledgersmb in
your case localy.
Once that is done, meaning it works on the machine installed on you are
looking at apache to service request to remote users.
Which it should already our of the box.
Knowing the IP address of the Debian machine ( CLI-> ifconfig )
got to your Windows machine and typ http://<ipaddress of the
debian>/ledgersmb/admin.pl
What do you see?
Also go to http://<ipaddress of debian box>/
and tell us what you see... i.e.
http://192.168.1.1/ledgersmb/login.pl

As James observes, this is a slightly unusual network range to use -
192.168.x.y would be more common.

169.254.0.0/16 is a "zeroconf" address -- it's what Windoze uses when
it gets lost (can't figure out what it's address should be), but there

RFC 1918 outlines the following addresses for use within private networks:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)
However, 169.254.0.0/16 is considered a bogus address. It can be found
in the bogon listings and will be dropped by properly configured
routers, so can be used as a private address group (but that's not
recommended).

Windoz does get lost lots, but 169.254.0.0/16 was allocated
specifically for zeroconf, and it's a legitimate way to do networking.
That windoz fails into using their network, and often route 0.0.0.0/0
to this LAN, so anyone within wireless listening of you can hijack *ALL*
your traffic, is certainly a sin, but...
As you say, Linux and Mac (and Cisco and ...) can easily participate
in such a network, which usually is what you would permit to be
configured if you and your friends are having a LAN party in the middle
of the park.
I would not call it a bogus address for this reason.
It's not crazy to use this on your LAN, given Bonjour/LLDMS/mDNS/Avahi
(whichever you want to call it), you can use it along with a stable
name.
I just don't recommend it either.
