I have determined that this problem is related to perl 5.10 in sql-ledger. I set up another webserver running perl 5.8 and connected to the database remotely, and the errors disappeared.
In the case of the ledgersmb install I am working on, this is a standalone box for POS, and it already has perl 5.10 installed on it. rolling back to 5.8 has turned out to be no easy feat. I could use a virtual machine, but once again, I run into the likelihood of making it over complicated for the end users.
I could also reinstall the box to an older version of debian and restore the database, but I would prefer to avoid that as well, since it is now in it's production environment.
Before I start examining the change log and trying to educate myself on intricacies of perl, are there any suggestions on a faster/better way to approach fixing this?

I have been doing a little research since we talked and may have
another possible answer for you.
What versions of DBI and DBD::Pg are you running?
