Just as an additional note here.....

PostgreSQL 8.3 changes the way that implicit casting is handled (it pretty much isn't anymore).  This bug may be the tip of the iceberg.  We don't expect to guarantee that things will work with 8.3 until LSMB 1.4 or so but we are certainly willing to correct issues that users find.
