I think that the Beancounter site has an excellent tutorial for learning the basics of the book-keeping side of accounting.

Agreed. The fundamentals have not changed for centuries. See the above site. Software systems have made for very significant shortcuts/improvements though. As long as double-sided entries are guaranteed by the system, the concept of copying summary figures from journals to ledgers and later having to prove/reconcile this drops away.
