Update / Edit GL Trans doesn't work

Chris - thank you for your reply re the Capital A/c
and the Divident a/c, much appreciated.

Another Q: 
when in 'Edit General Ledger Transaction' screen,
no edits are written to the dbase - I am having
to resort to tinkering directly with the tables.

Why won't they 'take' ?
I've tried editing £s, dates, notes, memo, ...
nuffin'
