V. 1.3.40 Error punching payment of vendor invoice.

I just upgraded from 1.3.39 to 1.3.40 and registering payment of 
incoming invoice (my second transaction after upgrade) fails with error 
"Internal Server Error".  Apache error log shows:

("{516.8}") as an ARRAY ref while "strict refs" in use at

"516.8" is the amount.  How can I fix this?
