Ok. This and the other errors indicate that the database wasn't of the expected structure. How did you connect? Did you use the command line program:

 $ psql -d aels

?

If you didn't use the -d argument option, that'd explain most of your errors. Maybe you can retry with the -d parameter, if that's the case?

Logging in at setup.pl gives the database as 'postgres'

That doesn't seem correct. Can you tell us which parameters you enter into the 'setup.pl' login page? Did you enter 'aels' in the 'database' field? (the third one?)
