Dear Chris and Jame,Thanks so much for your quick responses.
In answer to Jame's question, I'm more or less doing this manually. I'm not very familiar with Linux, so it's a real headache. I tried using the Ubuntu guide for 1.3, but the one I used had a problem with the ledgersmb.conf (it suggested changing a few lines in it and it took me a while to figure out that that I put my own bug into the installation by doing so).
Chris, your question about postgres led me to reinstall it and make sure I have the latest version (it was 8.3 before).
It also gave me the hint to search for the /tmp/dblog_stderr file which didn't exist.
I reinstalled Postgresql and now it's at version 8.4.11.
The switch to 8.4 got me past the database creation screens accessed from:
http://localhost/ledgersmb/setup.pl
It also generated the /tmp/dblog_stderr, dbblog, and dblog_stdout files in the tmp directory at the root level.
However, now the attempt to log into the created database from http://localhost/ledgersmb/login.pl generates this message:
Error!
Database is not the expected version. Was 1.3.0, expected 1.3.12. Please re-run setup.pl against this database to correct.
The /tmp/dblog_stderr file is long, but I noticed the following:
#########

I'll try to attach the file to this e-mail.
I should mention that I chose "us" for the country (Japan wasn't listed) and that I have 2 languages on my machine English (US) and Japanese.
Thanks again!! At least now I feel as if I'm making some progress...

documentation?
One reason I ask is that I've been working on Debian packaging for
1.3.12 & I'm getting further into being able to use the application than
you appear to be, but I'm still seeing issues. (Online editing of
Stylesheets and Templates isn't working on a test install.)
