I've no idea to be honest - I just downloaded the 1.2.10 tar and opened
it over the existing files as instructed - however that was some time
back and I've used it successfully since, and this only happened today!

I would try untarring 1.2.10 over the top again.  1.2.11 will probably be out shortly as well.

This sounds to me like some files were downloaded or updated from svn /trunk.  The question is how/why and this is probably specific to your system (if it wasn't you would have seen it after the initial 1.2.10 installation).
