Entity identifier

I'm looking for a way in the existing 1.4 database schema to provide an identifier for a vendor. I have identifiers in an external system. In the old 1.2 vintage LSMB database there was 'vendornumber' which suited this purpose. In the current scheme where a vendor is simply a classification of Entity is doesn't appear that there is really an equivalent column. Is there something I'm missing?
