I find the need to do this surprising.

Here I limit customer drop-down to only 10 entries and it is not used  
because (of course) I have hundred of customers. This a text-entry  
field is shown instead, and I just enter the first three letters of  
the customer's name before hitting "enter". The correct customer  
entry is found automatically unless there are multiple customers with  
that sequence of letters in their name, in which case a list of  
customer names is shown, with a radio box used to select the correct  
one.
