I think this highlights the need for many of us to think through an
upgrade process that protects us from ever getting into a situation
where we break a working environment trying to upgrade.

That's why we went to a move, create, and populate major upgrade model. 

This will of course be further refined in future versions, but the idea is that your data resides intact, making it quick and easy to back out of an upgrade.
